Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker games. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. Omaha 8 or better starts like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A round of betting follows where players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is known as the flop. A further sequence of wagering happens. After all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. Another round of betting happens and then the river card is revealed. The entrants will have to make the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where a few entrants can get confused. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must use precisely 3 cards from the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical approach in nearly all poker games.
A lower hand is more difficult, but really opens up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the whole pot.
While it seems difficult initially, following a few hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental nuances of play with ease. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an exciting range of betting possibilities and because you have numerous individuals battling for the high, as well as several trying for the low.
