Hiding Tells

Do you ever acquire that itch? The itch to gamble, to head to the nearest gambling house, to come across a good stakes casino game of Texas hold’em, to sit at a Chemin de fer table for hours on end. I really like that itch. And I like to scratch it.

I also love to watch men and women bet. No 2 poker faces seem alike. When I bet I like to assume I put on a poker face that’s impassable. Except I know I have specific gestures. For one, the only time I smoke is when I bet on poker or Black-jack. And then I smoke. But I chain smoke no matter if I am winning or losing, no matter if I’ve a very good hand or bad.

I once bet inside a weekly poker game. The game was usually 5 card draw. There was a man who wagered with us just about every week who always wore a hat. When he was dealt a great hand, unconsciously, he would start touching and betting with his hat. Pointless to say, he by no means won.

The very best poker player I ever saw was a man who created additional movements and signals at a poker table than anybody I had ever met. He was impeccable in the way he dressed. Always an costly suit and tie, footwear shined and nails manicured. He was meticulous in this manner. And he was usually brushing his pants or rubbings his hands or stacking his chips in neat little piles.

I use to study him for hours. I would tried to see if I could spot his tell. Selecting fuzz off his jacket- did this mean he was bluffing? Arranging his chips in a short pile – did this imply he had a great hand?

Several years later I ran into him in the bar in Chi town and we had a beer. I asked him if he were aware of all those actions he manufactured or if they were subconscious. He told me that just about every single thing he did at a poker table was deliberate. He said that everybody is often checking out everybody else’s poker face. They’re attempting to detect the the tell.

So his method was to give them lots to think about. His reasoning was if they have been thinking about him picking a piece of fuzz off his shirt and what it meant they certain were not thinking about their cards.

His system was diversion. And it worked for him. In no way give up a system that functions for you.
