Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 where he enjoyed taking part in various card games at a young age. He found himself becoming really aggressive in these card games as he was competing against his dad. After graduating from high school, Howard decided to put higher education on hold for a bit and moved to New York to compete in some formidable chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were difficult as he would play countless hours and do not win a majority of the time. He made some additional money by being an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he might boost his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He made an effort to get more sleep and focus more on the game.
The definite improvement in his skills happened when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best players would often compete against one another. He was able to access a number of the greatest minds in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would hone his logical thinking skills. Howard applied these strategic ideas to the game of NL texas hold’em.
Howard also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. Annie was an excellent student of poker as she would always be asking questions about how to make the correct decision. He told Annie to move out to Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the greatest women players the poker world ever. He moved to Sin City in Nineteen Ninety Three and participated in cash games for the successive decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, he decided to participate in more tournaments.
