Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he enjoyed participating in different card games at a young age. He discovered himself getting very competitive in these particular card games as he was playing his father. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a bit and moved to New York to participate in some formidable chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were difficult as he played extensive hours and lost a majority of the time. He made some additional cash by becoming an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he might better his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He brought about an attempt to acquire more rest and focus even more on poker.
The actual improvement in his abilities happened when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable players would frequently compete against each other. He was able to access some of the foremost players in chess. Howard also assisted his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. She was a great student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard Lederer told Annie to move out to Vegas and play in the WSOP competition. Annie Duke is one of the greatest women players the poker arena today. He relocated to Las Vegas in 1993 and competed in cash games for the subsequent 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, he decided to compete in more tournaments.
