Net High Stakes Poker- Who is Gus Hansen?

Gus Hansen had a wonderful year on the WPT where he was the only gambler to make it to the last poker table in 3 of the competitions. Gus Hansen has appeared on High Stakes Poker on The Game Show Network where he paid $400, 000 to play. You might recall one of the largest pots in big stakes poker recorded history competing against Daniel Negreanu. Hansen raked in a big pot with quads against Negreanu’s full house. Hansen has earned many televised poker appearances and is thought to be one of the greatest players anywhere in the world. While competing in web poker, a different side of Hansen has emerged. Gus regularly competes in the 200/400 NL max buy-in of $40, 000. Hansen generally buys-in for the minimum of $16, 000 and gambles very weak. He waits for a decent hand and then goes all in. I accept that Gus is a great poker player but certainly not even close to the familiar players at 200/400NL. Unless he is broke, he has little or no reason to settle at the table with the min buy in.

Buying in for the min takes most of the skill out of big stack poker. Gus is assumed to be 1 of the best poker players anywhere in the world but he can’t buy-in for the full amt.. I think television can skew our perception of the real world at times. The best poker players in the world might be players you have won’t have heard about. Gus can be seen competing in web poker on Full Tilt. He generally participates in big stakes omaha hold’em and Holdem. Gus has proven himself as a tournament player. Can he use his abilities in money games?
