Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five where he enjoyed participating in different card games when he was young. He found himself getting really competitive in these particular card games as he was playing his father. After finishing high school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a bit and relocated to New York City to play some formidable chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s first two years were rough as he played countless hours and don’t win a majority of the time. He earned some extra cash by being an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he might boost his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He brought about an attempt to get more sleep and focus attention even more on the game.
The actual improvement in his game began when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable gamblers would frequently challenge one another. Howard was able to access some of the foremost players in chess. With their assistance, he would hone his logical thinking skills. Howard applied these strategic concepts to the game of NL texas hold’em.
He also helped his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie was an excellent student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper decision. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to head out to Las Vegas and play in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the best female players the poker arena ever. He relocated to Sin City in 1993 and played cash games for the next 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
