Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five where he loved gambling on different card games when he was young. He found himself becoming really aggressive in these card games as he was competing against his father. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard decided to put higher education on hold for a bit and relocated to New York City to play some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial two years were tough as he would play extensive hours and don’t win most times. He made some additional cash by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he could improve his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to acquire more rest and focus more on poker.
The real advancement in his abilities began when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest gamblers would regularly challenge one another. He was able to access several of the best players in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would hone his strategic thinking techniques. Howard used these strategic concepts in the game of NL texas hold’em.
Howard also helped his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard Lederer told Annie to head out to Las Vegas and play in the WSOP competition. She is one of the strongest female players the poker world has ever seen. Howard headed to Las Vegas in 1993 and competed in money games for the subsequent 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
